Currencies Settings

  • Site Currency: This is currency your site will use in all the auctions.
  • Money format: Allows you to select whether you want your site to use the US or European style of money formatting when displaying a money amount.
  • Decimal digits: This allows you to set how many decimal digits the currency your site uses. An example would be the US dollar uses the format $0.DD so since there are two decimal digits you would enter two for US currency. Decimals can also be turned off here if the value is set to zero.
  • Symbol position: Changes whether your site displays the currently used currency abbreviation before of after the money value.

Time Settings

  • Time Zone: Allows you to set the default time offset for your site. To determine the amount of offset you need use the chart on following link: worldtimezone.com

Dates Format

  • USA format/Non-USA format: Allows you to pick whether you site displays the month or the day first when writing out a date. mm/dd/yyyy or dd/mm/yyyy

Default country

  • Default country: Allows you to set a default country that will be used throughout your site. This can be used to make things easier for your users if your site targets users of a particular country.

Show counters

These options allow you to activate counters which will be displayed the header of each page on your site.

  • Active auctions: Shows the current number of active auctions.
  • Registered users: Shows the current number of registered users.
  • Online users: Shows the current number of online users.

Multilingual support

  • Default language: The default language is English.

If you want to enable multilingual support or change the default language you must follow the steps below:

If you want to add a new language make a duplicate of language/EN and name it with the appropriate name: i.e. if you are translating to French you will need to name the directory FR

The first thing is to define the characters encoding your language requires at the top of the messages file. The variable you must edit is $CHARSET. UTF-8 encoding should work with almost all the languages. Next you'll have to define the document reading direction. The variable to modify is $DOCDIR and can have two possible values: ltr (left-to-right): this is the default and means the text must be read from left to right rtl (right-to-left): means the text must be read from right to left (i.e. Arabian, Hebrew, etc)

Once changed $CHARSET and $DOCDIR according to the language you are translating into, you will have to translate all the error messages and user interface messages contained in the messages file.

You will then need the flag(s) GIFs for the languages you are going to use, in the includes/flags directory. Get the flag(s) you need and change the file name(s) to be XX.gif, where XX is the language code for your country language. Copy the renamed flag file(s) in the includes/flags/ directory.

Note: for each translation, you need the corresponding XX.gif file in includes/flags/

Select the default language below. All the other available languages will be available in the home page (the corresponding flags will be shown).

Categories Sorting

The categories list in the left column of the home page, can be sorted alphabetically or on the number of auctions contained in each category (categories counters). The first two radio buttons on this admin preferences page allows you to pick how the categories will be sorted.

  • Categories to show: This allows you to set the number of categories you want to be shown in the left column of the home page

Users Authentication

By default WeBid asks the user password before an auction is submitted or a bid is placed. This is a recommended additional security measure but you can disable the default setting by selecting No user authentication.

Users Confirmation Method

On WeBid each users account must be activated before it can be used. You have three different methods of activation to choose from:

  • Manual Admin Activation: Admin will receive an email each time a new member signs up and their application is ready to be reviewed. This method is probably not your best option if you want a high volume auction site. Probably the only time you would want this option would be if you need to control who can be users.
  • Self Activation: Users must activate their own accounts, by clicking on an activation link in an email they receive on registration. (this is probably your best choice)
  • Auto Activation: Users account is automatically activated on registration (not recommended). One danger with this method is that a users may enter an incorrect email address and still be able to win an item without receiving an email notification.

HTML meta Tags

To help crawler-based search engines (like Google) to better expose your site, you can use the Meta Description Tag and the Meta Keywords Tag. Both will give the search engine additional information besides the one they grab from your site's pages but do not expect to get a good ranking in any search engine just because of Meta Tags! Some search engines ignore Meta Tags at all. A good article to learn more about Meta Tags can be found here.

  • To Disable Meta Tags: Leave the field(s) blank.
  • Meta Description Tag: The Meta Description Tag is usually used to describe your pages in the search results pages search engines show. Enter the text which better describes your site. More information on the description tag can be found on wikipedia.
  • Meta Keywords Tag: The Meta Keywords Tag gives some search engines additional information to use to index your site. Enter the your keywords separated by comas (i.e. books, books auctions, book sales). More information on the keywords tag can be found on wikipedia.

Contact the seller

Giving anybody the option to contact sellers through your website is not recommended. For this reason WeBid gives the following three options to allow you the ability to decide if sellers can be contacted by users browsing your site or not:

  • Any User: Any visitor can contact the seller (the ability to contact the seller will be ALWAYS shown).
  • Only Logged In Users: Only logged in users can contact the seller (the ability to contact the seller will be shown only to other users of your site if logged in).
  • Nobody: Nobody can contact the seller (the ability to contact the seller will NEVER be shown).

  • Include winners' address in e-mails: You can decide to have the winners address included in the notification e-mail sent to the seller when an auction closes. If you select yes here it might be a good idea to tell buyers that you will be sending their addresses to the sellers of any auctions they win in your Terms & Conditions Page or Privacy Policy Page.

Bidder Privacy

  • Activate Bidder Privacy: Activating this option the bidder's identity is hidden to everyone but the seller of the item.

Auction Settings

  • Enable Proxy Bidding: Enable/ Disable the proxy bidding feature.
  • Allow custom start date: Users can set a custom start date for auctions.
  • Display Custom Increments: Select Yes if you want the custom bid increment selection to be displayed in the Sell page. Otherwise select No.
  • Hours until auction ends count-down: Hours remaining on an auction until the time remaining becomes an automatic countdown timer.
  • Enable Featured Items: Allows sellers to make their auctions featured on the homepage and category pages.
  • Enable Highlighted Items: Allows sellers to make their auctions highlighted (displayed listing in a different colour in search results etc).
  • Enable Bold Items: Allows sellers to make their auctions bold (displayed listing in bold in search results etc).
