Replace Category on home page with Events

Is there an easy way to focus on an event with items categorized inside the event instead of the focus being on individual items with random selling times. I am looking to setup events for charity auctions and allow buyers to preview and pre-bid these items before the charity event. Kind of like a silent bid auction. The issue is there may be more then one auction at a given time. So again we need to summarize the items for each event in a heading. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thank you in advance!
