    PHP:

    head>
    <
    title>{PAGE_TITLE}</title>

    <
    meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset={CHARSET}">
    To
    PHP:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"
    >
    <

    Not sure if you need to link them anymore think you just upload the favicon.ico to the root of your site.
    Most of the newer browsers automaticaly search for favicon.ico when you add a favorit

    Thank you this really helped me.
    Just to point out to new people that don't have advanced skills.

    Make sure you get the link between the </title> and the <meta>
    Just like below it took me ages to find this out by looking closely at nay27uk set out above.

    <title>{PAGE_TITLE}</title>
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="{SITEURL}images/favicon.ico">
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset={CHARSET}">

    Hope this helps everyone.
    Thank you.

    The easiest is to replace the favicon.ico image at the root with your favicon.ico
